Iowa is for Winners

Ira would be proud...

Ira McGladrey, who founded The I.B. McGladrey Company in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1926, found success in Iowa, and would most certainly be proud of the recent success of two of Iowa's greatest athletic stars.

Team McGladrey member Zach Johnson shocked the golfing world in April 2007 with his amazing victory at The Masters. He continues to be a solid performer on the PGA tour and we are proud to have him a part of the McGladrey team.

Even more recently, we can all celebrate the gold-medal winning success of Shawn Johnson, who won the Gold on the Balance Beam, in addition to her 3 Silver medals at this year's Olympics.

Success doesn't stop there though. The readers of the Des Moines Business Record just voted RSM McGladrey as the Best Business Consulting Firm and McGladrey & Pullen the Best Accounting Firm for 2008. RSM McGladrey was also runner-up in the Best Computer Consulting, Best Executive Search and Best Wealth Management Firm categories.

Iowa certainly is for winners, whether it be in golf, gymnastics or business!

The McGladrey DesMoines office currently has a number of exciting opportunities. Click on the job titles below to learn more about these specific positions, and how to to join this winning team.

Meet a Recruiter, B.J. Snelling, National Recruiting

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both..."
This is the introductory line from one of my favorite poems The Road not Taken, by Robert Frost.
I think of this poem often as I look back upon my choices and the different paths I have taken in my career and personal life. One of these paths led me to RSM McGladrey, and how glad I am I chose to venture down that road!

I started with RSM McGladrey as a contract recruiter working with our Experienced Hire Recruiting team based in Chicago, IL. Within six months, I had moved in to a full time recruiting role working to hire for our Tax, Audit, and Consulting practices within the Great Lakes area.
Last October, I joined our National Recruiting Team, where I have been a part of various recruiting related projects. While I miss recruiting and working directly with candidates, I enjoy having the chance to work internally with our recruiters from across the country! Some of the initiatives I have been able to participate in include development of a recruiting community intranet site, new hire training, and helping to re-launch our Employee Referral Site and our Internal Career Center Site.

In addition to new paths in my professional life, I have also had several recent adventures in my personal life. Last summer, my husband, Anthony and I welcomed a new addition to our family, our baby daughter, Abigail. Her older brother, Ben who is 8, enjoys playing with her and reading books to her. I guess she is still at the age where she does not bother him yet! So, you can imagine my spare time is spent walking to the park, swimming with the kids, attending my son's soccer and baseball games, and when there is time taking a well-deserved rest! Recently, we just packed up the family and made the decision to move to Denver, CO - where we now call home for just about three weeks! It was tough to leave the great city of Chicago, but being in Denver affords us the opportunity to be closer to our family - something we did not have during our time in Chicago. I have to say, that I still have to pinch myself when I see the mountains at my doorstep each day.

I'm excited to be a contributor to this blog! My hope is to be able to provide answers to various questions that may come in from time to time from individuals visiting our site and our Career Center. Be sure to check out the upcoming 'Ask B.J.' posts on the blog- coming soon!
In the mean-time, have fun reading and learning more about who we are! Feel free to ask those questions, too!

Meet a Recruiter - Jay Olson, Senior Recruiter, Upper Midwest

It amazes me how in this day and age it has become relatively easy to "meet" people online, yet you might not get to really know them all that well. My hope is that through various posts and contributions to Success Starts Here you'll get to know me a bit better, but I thought it might be nice to give you a picture (both literally and figuratively) of who I am.

My career with McGladrey started almost two years ago. I was actually hired to be the recruiter for the Upper Midwest Economic Unit's (UMEU) Consulting group. I came in, hit the ground running and before you knew it, the Consulting group's positions were being filled pretty quickly. That success garnered the question, "What else could Jay be working on?" The answer: Audit. So now I focus solely on filling Audit positions in the UMEU's five office locations (Minneapolis, Duluth, and Rochester, Minnesota; along with Sioux Falls, South Dakota and La Crosse, Wisconsin). Before coming to McGladrey I really had no idea what an Auditor even did, but my time recruiting for them has really opened my eyes to the amazing people who do a very interesting job. The stereotypical accountant has no place with McGladrey auditors!

I've been working as a recruiter for seven years now. I've done recruiting on both a corporate (UnitedHealth Group) and search firm (RobertHalf) level. I can honestly say that McGladrey is the best environment I've ever been a part of. If you don't believe me, drop me a line...I bet I can convince you!

Since McGladrey is big on the work/life balance I actually have a great life outside of the office. I've been married for eight years and have a son (4) and daughter (1) who take up the majority of my time. We live near Minneapolis which is an amazing town to call home. When I'm not chasing my son around or admiring my daughter's quest to learning to walk, I like to run, play golf, volleyball, softball, and watch movies. And yes, I'll even admit that I am a Playstation 3 fan.

I tend to live my life with the thought of, "you'll never know unless you ask." So, if you want to know anything else about me, please, just ask!

If you're interested in a couple of the jobs I'm working hard to fill check out the links below:
Audit Manager - Construction/Real Estate
Audit Manager - Health Care / Non Profit
Audit Manager - Manufacturing Wholesale Distribution
Audit Senior Associate - Manufacturing Wholesale Distribution

Coaching Makes a Difference

The August 10th Boston Globe features a nice article, 'Coach Wellness', which features the 'Coach On Call' benefit that we offer our employees, and in particular, highlights the story of an employee based in our Quincy, MA office. "Coach Karen" is quite popular here, and is making a big difference in the life of many of our employees. The work and the hours in our industry can be stressful and long at times, so our ability to offer this benefit is a positive reflection on how much we care for the overall well being of our people.

On a somewhat ironic side note, my former employer, MITRE, is also featured in this article. Both McGladrey and MITRE are well deserving of mention in this article as I can personally attest that both have a strong commitment to ensuring that their employees have the resources available to make them successful both in their work and in their life.

The Big Give!

RSM McGladrey’s BIG GIVE

. . . One Firm. One Family. One World.

The Minneapolis and Duluth, Minnesota offices along with the Sioux Falls, South Dakota office of RSM McGladrey’s decided to have an intern-led project called the BIG GIVE. The BIG GIVE is much like Oprah’s Big Give. The summer interns were split into two teams to compete to raise the most funds for the charity of their choice. Each team was given a $500 check card and was asked to formulate a business plan, track expenses, and conduct an event. In addition to the many learning opportunities gained through participating in RSM McGladrey’s BIG GIVE, the project turns non-billable-time due to slower summer work loads into a productive purpose benefiting the community.

The two competing teams chose a couple of great charities and/or causes. One team chose to put on a kickball tournament that helped benefit the Gillette Childeren's Foundation. The other chose to run a school supply drive that will benefit different local charities near our office locations.

On August 8th, the two groups will give a final presentation including information on their charity of choice, the fundraising strategy, and the results of the activity. While final numbers are still being tallied for both events I can tell you at the five offices that make up the Upper Midwest Economic Unit of RSM McGladrey were able to collect over $11,940 worth of school supplies!

Hats off to our fantasic interns and all the effort they put in to make sure we lived the motto of: ...One Firm. One Family. One World.

Chicago Offices Win 2nd Straight Workplace Award

I think that the most fun I'll have on Success starts here will be when I get to announce the various workplace awards that we seem to be getting more-and-more of these days. We just got another one this week when it was announced that the Chicago offices of the Great Lakes Economic Unit (EU) were once again named to the National Association of Business Resources’ list of Chicago’s 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For - 2008.

These annual awards honor Chicago employers who recognize their employees as their greatest asset, something which we have done well enough now to make the list for two consecutive years. So, congratulations Chicago, I knew you were 'my kind of town' for a good reason!
