Members of McGladrey’s Los Angeles office awoke early this past Saturday and ventured down LA’s industrial district to volunteer our services at the Los Angeles Food Bank. The Los Angeles Food Bank is a nonprofit charitable organization that has been serving the disadvantaged of the LA community since 1973. They are at the heart of a charitable food distribution network that includes over 1,000 charitable agency sites throughout Los Angeles County.
Armed with caffeine and a heart full of good intentions several team members from the Los Angeles office donned rubber gloves and weeded through hundreds of pounds of apples, oranges, and cauliflower. We were responsible for inspecting the food products and packing them into crates for shipment to missions, shelters, senior centers, soup kitchens and the schools. They were also being disbursed to Kid’s Café, where kids can meet at Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA’s/YWCA’s, churches, community centers, schools, and other sites where children gather after school so they can get a boxed meal. For some kids this is the only meal they have all day. The LA Food Bank also supports The BackPack Program. Every Friday, The BackPack Program provides children with backpacks containing enough nutritious food for six meals to ensure they have food for the weekend.
It was an honor for Team McGladrey Los Angeles to take part in an outreach program that is making a substantial impact on the overall nutritional health of underprivileged families. To have the opportunity to work side by side with fellow colleagues for the greater good of our community and give back when we are so blessed was an amazing way to spend our Saturday morning. We’re gearing up for another volunteer day at the LA Food Bank on June 29th.
